Data Center

Welcome Italia’s Data Centers are designed and created with security systems, power supplies, air conditioning and redundancy capabilities to prevent interruptions of the services provided and ensure business continuity even in the event of maintenance, breakdown or incidents.

The Data Centers are hosted at the company sites in direct contact with the Network Operation Centers (NOCs) and are constantly supervised by highly-trained staff.

The two facilities at Pisa and Lucca are 33 km apart and host, in a protected environment monitored 24/7 and always connected, the technology platforms for the supply of all Vianova services (MailWI, MeetingWI, CloudWI, etc.) and the equipment and servers in colocation for Customers.

All business processes and the data management system are certified ISO 27001 and are constantly upgraded and improved to always offer the Customer the highest security levels.

The siting of the facilities in Italy offers Customers additional protection with regard to legislation on the security and confidentiality of company data.

Security

  • the facilities are located in areas of low seismic activity and built according to anti-flooding and anti-seismic criteria capable of withstanding serious floods and earthquakes
  • the facilities are protected by perimeter alarm and video-surveillance systems connected remotely to local security companies
  • access to the Data Centers is only allowed to authorized personnel certified by electronic identification and biometric readers
  • opening individual cabinets at Pisa is only possible with personal electronic identification
  • all systems are constantly monitored 24/7

Fire protection

  • the Lucca Data Center is equipped with a high-pressure fire extinguisher system using nitrogen in tanks
  • the Pisa Data Center adopts an active fire prevention system that reduces oxygen content. The oxygen percentage is kept below the minimum levels required for combustion, thus making it impossible for any kind of flame to develop
  • the area of the Data Centers is compartmentalized by fireproof REI 120 walls and doors
  • a special detection system checks the hydrogen levels in the UPS and battery areas and, if necessary, automatically activates the air exchange systems

Power supply

  • electrical plant is based on multiple and independent power supply systems with distinct and diversified routes
  • in case of emergency electrical continuity is ensured by mutually-redundant static-switch UPS units, 48V power units and diesel generators
  • the Pisa UPSs are spread across separate areas with independent cooling units
  • the power supply of each rack employs duplicate-line redundancy

Cooling

  • the arrangement of separate hot and cold aisles allows for reduced consumption and greater efficiency of the equipment hosted
  • the cooling system with dual power supply circuit ensures the maintenance of temperature and humidity within a range of predetermined values
  • the Pisa air conditioners are powered without interruption (continuous cooling) even in the case of the generators coming online

Redundancy

  • 100 Gbps capacity for connecting fiber optic ring between the Pisa and Lucca Data Centers
  • local and geographic redundancy of all core equipment (routers, switches, telephone switchboards, servers, etc.) with synchronous replication of data storage
  • redundancy of the connection circuits of all POPs towards the Pisa and Lucca Data Centers
  • redundancy of all connecting circuits with the internet exchange points and the national telephone network

Note

  • the Pisa Data Center is designed and built according to Tier IV standards
  • in the Pisa Data Center the percentage of oxygen in the air is maintained at around 15.4% (at sea level the concentration of oxygen in the air is around 20.9%) so as to make combustion impossible
  • in the cold aisles of the Pisa Data Center the temperature is maintained between 21 and 21.5 degrees Celsius
  • the dimensions of the 42-unit racks of the Pisa Data Center are 85x120x210 cm and those of the 20-unit racks are 85x120x105 cm
  • the 42-unit rack dimensions at the Lucca Data Center are 60x107x210 cm
